Mahie Gill began in Punjabi cinema and theatre before her breakthrough as Paro in Anurag Kashyap’s Dev.D (2009), a modern retelling of Devdas that won her the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress.

Theatre at Panjab University

Born Rimpy Kaur Gill in Chandigarh, she completed a master’s degree in theatre at Panjab University in 1998 and worked in theatre and Punjabi films before moving to Hindi cinema.

Breakthrough with Dev.D

Anurag Kashyap cast her as Paro in Dev.D, a role that brought critical acclaim and several debut awards. She went on to play Madhavi Devi in Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster and its sequel, earning a Filmfare Best Actress nomination, and appeared in Paan Singh Tomar.
